Mitochondria are emerging as key cellular mediators of radiation damage. In addition to their established role in energy production and metabolism, recent studies have shown that mitochondria participate in inflammation and immune response activation.
This symposium offers a unique overview of:
• The role of mitochondrial DNA and RNA in mediating the immunogenic response to radiation, focusing on a newly uncovered crosstalk between mitochondria and the nucleus.
• The crucial connection between mitochondrial status, compensatory metabolic changes and cancer radioresistance, which offers new molecular targets for radiotherapy.
