In honour of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science on 11 February, ESTRO is excited to share a powerful collage that features inspiring female scientists from institutes around the world. To celebrate this important day, ESTRO asked institutions for pictures of the incredible women in radiotherapy and oncology, and we received an overwhelming response. With over 70 pictures submitted, this initiative highlights the contributions of these amazing women and their dedication to the advancement of science.
This global event, which was established by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly and supported by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), UN Women and others, is aimed to promote equal access to science for women and girls. The initiative is a reminder that there is still much work to be done to achieve gender equality in science, with the global average of female researchers at just 33.3% (source: UNESCO).
While we celebrate the achievements of women in science, we also recognise the importance of diversity in all its forms. Our campaign highlights the invaluable contributions of women to science, which inspire young girls to see that a career in science, healthcare or radiotherapy is within their reach, while also emphasising the importance of diversity and inclusion in the field, where all genders play a vital role.
We thank everyone who contributed to this initiative and are excited to continue advocating a diverse and inclusive community in which all voices are heard and valued. Let’s keep inspiring the next generation of scientists!
