The Very Latest RTT Committee Member… Never Say Never
It is a great pleasure for me to be invited to enter as a full member of the E.S.T.R.O. Committee. Radiotherapy development and patient care represent the real core of my working life. The increasing number and complexity of advanced techniques require Radiation Therapists (RTTs) to become principal actors of the “radiotherapy film” rather than just simply performers. This means that more and more professional and human skills are required daily, as expertise increases with new competencies and abilities, yet the main pillar is represented by knowledge, as each RTT must know how, when and what to do to perform the best quality delivery to oncological patients.
As far as my professional growth is concerned, I achieved my RTT bachelor's degree in 1997 and first employment in 1998 at the San Giovanni Antica Sede (S.G.A.S.) Radiotherapy Clinic where I attained the status of an advanced practitioner both in EBRT and in Brachytherapy (BRT). I was made responsible for the development of an interstitial BRT procedure with I125 seeds for prostate cancer; responsible for intracavity BRT for breast cancer (MammoSite balloon) and also for gynecological BRT for cervix (HDR Ir192).
This experience made me understand the importance of building an excellent work group that can find its pillar in the close cooperation between different professional roles able to share knowledge and skills to focus on a target, share a purpose and find a common path to follow.
I achieved my 1°-degree Master's in Management in 2008 and was named SGAS RTT Coordinator in 2009.
I was asked for and I took part in the development of the Zenica Radiotherapy Department (BOSNIA ERZEGOVINA) as an Italian mission in 2013 (sharing expertise with Bosnian colleagues).
I moved to University of Turin Radiotherapy (A.O.U. CITTA’ DELLA SALUTE e della SCIENZA - Molinette) in 2014. This gave me the possibility to improve my skills with high complexity irradiation techniques (SRS, SABR, TBI, TMI, and cardiac arrhythmia ablation).
I was selected by the Turin University of Medicine as a complementary teacher in “Radiotherapy Techniques Application” (a 3-year course) in 2013.
I was named University of Turin RTT Coordinator in 2019 after attaining the status of advanced practitioner with a Tomotherapy System developing clinical shadowing for foreign RTTs who are approaching the Tomotherapy platform.
I was selected as Città della Salute of Turin Oncology Department representative in 2020 and became an ESTRO RTT Committee observer in 2022.
I have been recently recruited to take part in Trinity College Dublin's Study on the development of consensus guidelines for the management of osteoradionecrosis following radiation therapy for head and neck cancer (2023).
