Interview with Robbie Beckert recipient of Best RTT Award

Robbie Beckert - WashU Medicine, St. Louis, Missouri, USA
What have been the highlights of your career?
Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to be part of a team that has achieved several groundbreaking accomplishments in the adaptive radiotherapy field. I became one of two APRTs in the USA and the only APRT to specialize in online adaptive contouring. We treated the first adaptive patient using Ethos in the Western Hemisphere and, most recently, treated the first adaptive patient using protons in the Western Hemisphere. These experiences have not only allowed me to grow in my career but also helped set an example of what radiation therapists can achieve.
What do you think are the next challenges in your field?
As adaptive radiotherapy becomes more mainstream, new adaptive platforms and artificial intelligence will require specialized training to maximize safety and efficiency. I believe adaptive contouring should be a dedicated position to help combat the potential risks involved, which would require standardized training and credentialing from a national perspective. I think the next challenge in my field will be officially creating a new career pathway for Radiation Therapists within the adaptive space. Growth requires change, but I believe this can be achieved through collaborative efforts from administrations and institutions.
What does the award mean to you?
This award is incredibly meaningful to me because it validates the time and effort I’ve invested to demonstrate the positive impact an Advanced Practice Radiation Therapist can provide. It reassures me that I am on the right track and that my efforts are making a difference. This recognition encourages me to continue pursuing my passion.
To whom would you like to dedicate your award?
While I am honored to be recognized individually, I couldn't have achieved this without the support of my institution and my family. In the United States, my position is the first of its kind. The physicians and physicists from WashU Medicine have fully supported me, and my wife and kids have shown unwavering love and understanding. This award is a testament to our collective efforts.
