ESTRO meets Asia 2019

Singapore

The distribution of the global population has undergone drastic changes over the last decades. Asia now counts for 59,4% of the world’s population (compared to 9,6% for Europe and 4,8% for North-America). Amongst many other things, this also results in an increased regional need for cancer treatment, including radiation oncology.

Compared to Europe however, the differences in both the direct and indirect cancer treatment indicators are immense, requiring a diversified approach to address the resource and perception barriers around radiation oncology. Following requests from important local societies such as SEAROG, JASTRO and CSTRO, ESTRO’s offer of courses and workshops was successfully rolled out across Asia, creating the momentum for taking the collaboration to more expansive phase.

ESTRO has a tradition of building bridges – not only between radiation oncology professionals, but also between other stakeholders such as policy makers, other health care professionals, industry and patients. This is combined with the creation and active dissemination of the society’s collective scientific knowledge on radiation oncology via different platforms and formats, both in and outside Europe.

This combination of interdisciplinarity and the creation and distribution of scientific knowledge via different platforms puts ESTRO in a unique position to actively support the exchange of knowledge between the European and Asian communities. It’s also in line with the ESTRO’s strategy to further strengthen its profile as a leading international radiation oncology society. The organization of congress in Asia was therefore the next logical step in our collaboration with the Asian communities.

A first successful edition was held in December 2018, welcoming over 800 delegates and 34 exhibitors. 289 abstracts were submitted, and knowledge was exchanged and debated in 42 sessions.

For the second edition, a special RTT track will be added to the programme and we also expect the exhibition to grow substantially.

It is with great pleasure that we announce the second edition of the «ESTRO meets Asia» conference which will take place in Singapore, 06-08 December 2019.

The «ESTRO meets Asia» conference has as objective to bring radiation oncology collaboration between Europe and Asia to a new level - regarding science, education, technology and professional development, targeting all professionals working in the discipline (clinicians, medical physicists, RTTs and radiobiologists).
