14:15 - 15:30
Interdisciplinary Stream 1
Preventing radiation-induced toxicity in head and neck cancer patients
The session will begin with an overview of the impact of radiation-induced toxicities on treatment outcomes in head and neck radiotherapy followed by a clinician's point of view on preventing these toxicities. Next, a presentation on automated treatment planning will explain its role in reducing toxicities and in selecting optimal treatment modality (photons vs. protons). The limitations of deriving NTCP models from organs at risk DVHs without considering differences in radiosensitivity of different regions of the organs will be made clear and possible solutions offered before concluding the session with a presentation of pertinent trials, strategies and audits on mucositis management.
