WCB 2021 - Online

Registrations are now open
Programme hours are CET

Dear colleagues,

Over the past months, we have been monitoring the evolution of the travelling restrictions linked to the COVID-19 pandemic. The uncertain forecasts for the next months have led us to the decision to move the World Congress of Brachytherapy (WCB) in 2021 to a fully digital setting. It is my privilege and great pleasure to invite you to attend the WCB which will take place as an online congress from 6-8 May 2021.

Following up on the very successful World Congress in Barcelona in 2012 and San Francisco, CA, US in 2016, the World Congress of Brachytherapy will aim to gather leaders in the field of brachytherapy to deliver an exciting scientific programme.

The GEC-ESTRO Group led the efforts in the development of the scientific programme for this congress in close collaboration with the American Brachytherapy Society (ABS) and supported by the Australasian Brachytherapy Group (ABG),  the Asociación Ibero Latinoamericana de Terapia Radiante Oncológica (ALATRO), the Canadian Brachytherapy Group (CBG),  the Federation of Asian Organizations for Radiation Oncology (FARO) and  the Indian Brachytherapy Society (IBS). The Scientific Programme Committee for the congress is comprised of members from the participating brachytherapy societies.

The comprehensive scientific programme for WCB offers state-of-the-art teaching lectures, and symposia / debates on hot topics. The sessions will be organised around the topics of Physics, Prostate, Gynaecology, Breast, Gastrointestinal, Head & Neck, Eye/Orbit, and Skin, and finally, Health Economics.

The WCB can only become a successful scientific event thanks to the multitude of contributions coming via abstract submissions.

Abstracts accepted for WCB 2020 can be re-submitted for presentation during WCB 2021. Although the abstracts will undergo a new review process, the Scientific Programme Committee will make every effort to assign the re-submitted abstracts the same presentation format as intended for WCB 2020 initially. Re-submissions of WCB 2020 abstracts; re-submissions with updated findings, as well as new abstract submissions are welcome! You are, therefore, strongly encouraged to submit / re-submit an abstract by 11 November 2020 and become part of this prestigious event.

This congress will represent a good opportunity to exchange different brachytherapy indications, methods, and results from all over the world. We hope to welcome many participants virtually at this important event.

FALCON (Fellowship in Anatomic DeLineation and CONtouring) is the multifunctional ESTRO platform for contouring and delineation. For WCB 2021 we will be offering 3 tumour specific contouring workshops.

Prostate Cancer

Time:                   15 April 2021 – 18.00-20.00 CEST

Faculty:                Evert van Limbergen, David Buchser Garcia and Andrea Slocker Escarpa

This workshop focusses on prostate contouring specifically in the context of prostate brachytherapy.

The course consists of a contouring exercise, a contour review and discussion of different points of view, including an in-depth teaching lecture covering the background of target definitions, basic anatomy of the prostate, and anatomy as determined by transrectal echography, with examples in special cases. The course also provides some tips and tricks on how to handle suboptimal image quality. Moreover, it will provide room for participants to discuss their specific practical problems with experienced prostate brachytherapists.

Novel state of the art imaging techniques such as MRI – echo fusion and other peculiar cases will also be discussed.

Primary Vaginal Cancer

Time:                   22 April 2021 – 18.00-20.00 CEST

Faculty:                Lars Fokdal and Henrike Westerveld

Vaginal cancer is a rare gynaecological cancer with an annual incidence of 0.8–1.0/100,000. Curative treatment includes external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) and concomitant Cisplatin followed by a brachytherapy boost.

During the last decade major improvements in brachytherapy have been found with the introduction of image guided adaptive brachytherapy (IGABT) that takes the initial tumour dimensions as well as the residual tumour at time of brachytherapy into account. The aim of the contouring workshop is to gain knowledge about the use of this common target concept for IGABT in primary vaginal cancer. The workshop will consist of a theoretical lecture including an introduction of the target concept, followed by a contouring exercise where the target concept will be applied in practise.

Cervix Cancer

Time:                   29 April 2021 – 18.00-20.00 CEST

Faculty:                Ina Schulz-Jurgenliemk and Umesh Mahantshetty

This contouring workshop focusses on cervix cancer contouring, specifically for brachytherapy.

The course consists of pre-course homework contouring using the Falcon EduCase platform. A case and access to the system will be provided timely. During the workshop, we will address the principals of MRI based cervix cancer brachy contouring according to GEC-ESTRO recommendations. This includes clarifying the adaptive target concept, which is advised after elective (chemo)radiation. During the workshop, the homework contours will be presented and discussed, stressing the difference between contouring uncertainties and conceptual mistakes. In the days following the workshop, participants are invited to perform online contouring again for individual evaluation and feedback.

Format

Workshops consist on only one 2 hours virtual lesson held on WebEx.

Pre-workshop homework will be sent one week before the workshop lesson.

Abstract submission closed on 11 October 2020. Abstracts were peer reviewed and notifications of the review results have been sent to the presenting authors.

Abstracts were selected for the following presentation categories:

  • Oral Presentation: Abstracts selected for oral communication will be presented in a Proffered Papers session. Presenting authors will prepare a PowerPoint and record a 10-minute presentation. The recording will be broadcast during the congress in the online platform and delegates will be able participate in the text-based discussion during the presentation.
  • Best Oral Presentation: The three best abstracts selected for oral communication will be presented in a special moderated session. Presenting authors will prepare a PowerPoint and record a 15-minute presentation. The recording will be broadcast during the congress in the online platform and you will participate in the text-based discussion during the presentation. The presentation will then be considered by a discussant.

Further instructions to oral presenters will be sent in early March.

  • Poster Presentation: Abstracts selected as a poster presentation will be available in electronic format in the digital poster gallery before the congress and in the online congress platform for its duration.
